How Much Does PayPal Charge Its Users in 2024?

PayPal is the most popular payment processing and money-transferring platform in the world. Over 400 million people worldwide use PayPal to send and receive money because of the security and convenience the service offers. While everyone with an internet connection is free to create a PayPal account, and there are no subscription charges, users still need to pay fees to use PayPal’s services.

That being said, in many instances, using PayPal is a cheaper and faster alternative to bank transfers, so the costs can be worth it. Today’s article will discuss everything you need to know about the cost of using PayPal and go into detail about all the charges you may run into while using it.

How Much Does PayPal Charge and for What?

First of all, let’s explain why PayPal is charging its users. No business in the world can remain profitable, and yet alone in such a quality fashion without receiving some sort of compensation for its efforts. The platform doesn’t charge its users for creating and maintaining their accounts, so the fees are a viable way to cover PayPal’s business costs.

Transferring Money to Friends and Family

With that out of the way, let’s explain what PayPal will and will not charge you for. US users who send or receive money from their friends and family using their bank or PayPal accounts will not be charged a PayPal fee for this type of transfer. They will, however, pay a 2.9% PayPal credit card processing fee (+ a fixed amount based on the currency) if they send money from their credit or debit card instead.

Purchasing Goods and Services

Furthermore, PayPal doesn’t charge consumers for purchasing goods and services. The merchants who sell the goods and services, on the other hand, have to pay a 2.99% fee for receiving the money. Sellers are also required to pay additional PayPal merchant account fees, which will be explained in detail further in the article.

Personal International Transactions

When it comes to international transfers, PayPal charges its users for both sending and receiving money from another country. There are a few different charges and additional fees for this type of transfer, depending on the countries involved in the transaction. The PayPal international transfer fees will also be dissected below.

Withdrawing from PayPal

Finally, PayPal will never charge its users for withdrawing money from their PayPal to their bank accounts.

PayPal Consumer Fees

The following fees only apply to US PayPal users who don’t have a merchant account.

Buying With PayPal

Users can make online and in-store transactions without paying any PayPal purchase fees, only when no currency conversion is required. If the user wants to pay for goods and services in a currency other than the one the goods and services are listed in, a 4% fee is charged.

Buying and Selling Crypto With PayPal

Users can keep cryptocurrencies in their PayPal accounts free of charge. However, if the user decides to buy or sell crypto with PayPal, they will be charged a flat or percentage fee, depending on the value of the crypto they are transferring. A PayPal percentage fee of 1.50% will be charged for values over $1,000.01 and 1.80% for values between $200.01 and $1,000. Purchases or sales of crypto between:

  • $75 and $200 are charged $2.49,

  • $25 and $74.99 are charged $1.99,

  • $5 and $24.99 are charged $0.99,

  • $1 and $4.99 are charged $0.49.

Receiving Donations With PayPal

Users that want to receive donations via PayPal will have to cover the cost of every PayPal transaction made by paying the following fees:

  • Donate button rate - 2.89% + fixed fee based on currency received.

  • Generosity network rate - 2.89% + fixed fee based on currency received

  • PayPal checkout for donation rate - 2.89% + fixed fee based on currency received.

For donations received from other countries, users will pay an additional 1.50% PayPal international fee for each donation received.

Sending Domestic Personal Transactions With PayPal

Users from the US can send money from their bank, PayPal, or Amex Send account free of charge, using PayPal. If they want to send money from a credit or debit card instead, they will be charged a 2.9%, + a fixed amount based on the currency, PayPal credit card processing fee.

Sending International Personal Transactions With PayPal

Users that want to send money internationally will have to pay a 5%, + a fixed amount of between $0.99 and $4.99 charge, regardless of whether they are using a bank, PayPal, Amex Send accounts, or credit and debit cards.

Receiving Personal Transactions With PayPal

Users can receive money without paying any PayPal surcharge when no currency conversion is required. If the received money is in another currency, then a fixed fee, based on the currency received, is applied.

PayPal Merchant Fees

The following fees only apply to US users who have a merchant account with PayPal.

Receiving Domestic Transactions With PayPal as a Merchant

Users who receive money for selling goods and services pay multiple PayPal transaction fees for business accounts. If the payment they receive on their PayPal account is made with a payment method other than PayPal, they have to pay a 2.59% fee + a fixed amount based on the currency received. Additionally, there’s a 3.49% fee + a fixed amount based on the currency received fee for invoicing, checkouts, and paying with Venmo.

Moreover, QR code transactions are charged a 1.90% + a fixed amount based on the currency received PayPal business transaction fee for amounts of $10.01 and more. Amounts of up to $10 are charged a 2.40% fee + a fixed amount based on the currency received. QR code transactions through a third-party integrator are charged 2.29% + a flat fee of $0.09.

Finally, merchants are charged a 2.99% PayPal G&S fee and an additional 3.49% fee, + a fixed amount based on the currency received, for payments made through credit or debit cards.

Receiving International Transactions With PayPal as a Merchant

Users who receive funds from other countries for selling goods and services pay all the domestic transaction fees, plus an additional 1.50% international PayPal transaction fee.

Receiving Transactions With PayPal Here

Merchant users who use PayPal Here are charged a 2.70% fee for card present, in-store PayPal, and QR code transactions. The fee for keyed transactions is 3.50% + a fixed amount based on the currency received. For international PayPal Here transactions, there is an additional 1.50% fee.

Receiving Transactions With PayPal Online Card Payment Services

Merchant users receiving payments through virtual terminals pay 3.09% + a fixed amount based on the currency received PayPal virtual terminal fees. For Payments Pro and Payments Advanced transactions, users need to pay a 2.89% fee + a fixed amount based on the currency received. Finally, for advanced credit and debit card payments, the fee is 2.59% + a fixed amount based on the currency received. As always, the 1.50% international transaction fee is applied for all of these transactions as well, if the payment is done from another country.

Conclusion

So that is the state of PayPal fees in 2023. Of course, there are other fees we didn’t cover that not every user will stumble upon, as they are only charged in very specific situations. There are also optional fees for merchants that require special features from PayPal, which you can learn more about on PayPal’s website.
