Definition
The ability to be sensitive to one's own emotions, and understand their impact on work productivity and the relationships formed at work is known as self-awareness. Daniel Goleman identified self-awareness as one of the five dimensions of emotional intelligence.
Explanation
Leaders exhibiting self-awareness are able to construct an accurate picture of their own strengths and weaknesses. It is the ability of a leader to look within, and understand their individuality, and how their actions can affect those around them. The self-awareness of the leader brings to them a sense of self-confidence and a strong feeling of self-worth. It allows them to recognize their thought process when making decisions, and why they behave in different ways when placed in various situations.
Self-awareness is one of the five dimensions of emotional intelligence, as described by Daniel Goleman. The other four dimensions of emotional intelligence include: motivation, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills.
