We live in a global economy; however, some of the largest stock markets in the world are located in the United States, and they do follow an American holiday schedule. There are currently nine holidays on which these stock markets are closed, as well as special rules that often indicate the early close of these exchanges.

Stock Exchange Schedules

All of the major American exchanges, including the NYSE Euronext, and the NASDAQ, follow these same holiday schedules. Listed below are the calendars for the years 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 and 2021.

Special Holiday Rules

Listed below are some of the special rules that apply to holiday closings:

  • The Day after Thanksgiving is not an official holiday; however, the market has a tradition of closing at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.

  • When any holiday that is observed by the stock market or stock exchange falls on a Saturday, the market will not be open for business on the preceding Friday.

  • When any holiday that is observed by the stock market or stock exchange falls on a Sunday, the market will not be open for business on the following Monday.

Some holidays fall on different days, depending on the calendar year, including:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday in January

  • President's Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February

  • Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May

Stock Market Hours of Operation

The regular trading hours of the stock market are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The after-hour sessions run from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time for the NASDAQ and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the NYSE Euronext.
