Definition

The term NYSE Arca Major Market Index refers to a composite that includes twenty blue chip industrial stocks. There is significant overlap between the NYSE Arca Major Market Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Explanation

Previously referred to as the AMEX Major Market Index, the NYSE Arca Major Market Index consists of twenty blue chip industrial stocks. The index measures the performance of the industrial equities market in the United States. The index was first published on April 29, 1983, and although the original name seems to indicate the stocks trade on the AMEX, most of the securities trade on the NYSE.

There is significant overlap between the NYSE Arca Major Market Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). For example, and at the time of writing, seventeen of the twenty stocks of the Arca were also members of the DJIA. The performance of the index can be tracked using the stock ticker XMI. While options on the index are traded on the Amex and Euronext exchanges, it's also possible to trade futures contracts on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).
