Definition

The term Microsoft Technology Associate refers to a certification program designed for candidates wishing to pursue a career in information technology (IT). The Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) exam is designed to test the candidate's knowledge of fundamental IT concepts.

Explanation

The MTA is an entry level certification program in the fundamentals of IT infrastructure, database, and software development. The program is the first certification individuals will take as they begin to build their information technology careers. The electronic exam is offered in test centers throughout the year.

The MTA certification can be obtained by passing an exam in one of three areas:

  • IT Infrastructure: includes operating systems, upgrading clients, managing applications, managing files and folders in addition to managing devices.

  • Database Fundamentals: includes core database concepts, objects, manipulating data, administering a database and storage.

  • Software Development Fundamentals: includes core programming, object-oriented programming, software development, web applications, desktop applications and understanding databases.

Examinees are given 50 minutes to answer 30 to 50 questions; test results are available immediately following the exam. The results of the examination are scaled such that a passing score is 70. If a candidate does not receive a passing score, they may retake the test in 24 hours. If a passing score is not achieved on the second attempt, the candidate must wait seven days before making subsequent attempts. After the fifth unsuccessful attempt, the candidate must wait 12 months before starting the exam retake process again.
