Definition

The term human resources refers to the personnel in a company that are responsible for the coordination of all employee hiring, job applicant tracking, and employee skill development.

Explanation

Also known as talent management and workforce planning, the human resources management (HRM) department ensures an organization has a sufficient quantity of qualified workers. They are also involved with the recruitment, and screening, of job applicants; working closely with the hiring manager.

When seeking qualified candidates, the human resources representative may consider a variety of factors, including:

  • Sourcing: working with local agencies, universities and colleges to place individuals in the organization

  • Demographics: aligning the population in the workplace with the demographics of its customers or the communities it serves

  • Skills: understanding the need for a feeder pool of technical talent versus individuals with specific academic achievements

Finally, the human resources department may be involved with issues related to organizational planning and design, as well as the administration of employee benefits programs, risk management (worker's compensation), and payroll services.
