Shop Your Way Mastercard vs. Sears credit card

The Shop Your Way Mastercard and Sears Credit Card may seem like they’re the same thing, but they’re actually two different cards.

Both are linked to the Shop Your Way rewards program, but the Shop Your Way Mastercard lets you earn rewards on all purchases—even those outside of Sears and Kmart.

The Sears Credit Card is mainly for getting rewards and discounts at Sears and Kmart only.

Plus, the Shop Your Way card is a Mastercard, which means you can use it anywhere—while the Sears Credit Card is just for their stores.

In this review, we’ll talk about the Shop Your Way Mastercard specifically.

Pros explained—What we like

Rewards for all kinds of purchases

Earn points with the Shop Your Way Mastercard—whether you’re shopping at Sears, Kmart, or any other store.

No annual fee

Forget about extra costs since there’s no yearly fee for having this card.

Special offers just for you

Being a cardholder means you get access to cool offers and discounts only available to card members.

Extra perks for Shop Your Way members

If you’re part of the Shop Your Way rewards program, you’ll be able to score even more benefits and rewards.

Global acceptance

As a Mastercard, the Shop Your Way Mastercard is accepted almost anywhere, providing you with convenience and flexibility during your shopping adventures.

Add authorized users

Invite family members or close friends to be authorized users on your account, allowing them to contribute to earning even more rewards collectively.

Be careful with this, though. An authorized user’s actions can hurt your credit (if they charge more than you can pay or if they charge too much and your utilization percentage gets too high).

It’s best to keep only close family as authorized users.

Enhanced security features

Mastercard offers robust fraud protection to keep your account safe and secure, so you can shop with confidence.

Mobile app and online account management

Easily track your rewards, manage your account, and make payments with a user-friendly mobile app and an online portal.

Safety guaranteed

The issuer gives you a $0 Liability on Unauthorized Purchases, Extended Warranty®, Price Protection, and Identity Theft Protection.

Cons explained—Keep in mind

Extra complicated rewards structure

To maximize your rewards, you need to be eligible for them and apply for the Shop Your Way Additional Category Earn Program.

Here’s what you’ll find in the Terms and Conditions: “Whenever a percentage back in Points is stated herein, such percentage includes any Card Base Points (as defined below) and SYW Merchant Base Points. When Card Point and SYW Merchant Base Point offers are combined, total Points earned will be less than the combined Point totals for each offer.”

Need a translation from legalese?

Typically, you just earn points or a percentage of your purchases. But with Shop Your Way Mastercard, it isn’t that simple.

Not only do you need to know what Shop Your Way Global Points, Card Base Points, and SYW Merchant Base Points are, but you’ll also have to figure out the best way (and time) to combine them.

Interest rates can sting

Watch out for those higher interest rates compared to other cards, which might hurt if you don’t pay off your balance each month.

APRs might have been steadily going up everywhere—but still, over 30% is a lot.

If you’re someone who often keeps a balance on their card, you’ll want banks that offer a lower interest rate. Always keep an eye out for any introductory offers or promotional rates, but don’t forget to inquire about the regular rates after this period ends.

More rewards at Shop Your Way stores

While you get rewards everywhere, you score the most points at places like Sears and Kmart, so it’s best for frequent shoppers at these stores.

Your credit score’s on the line

Stay on top of your payments and keep an eye on your credit use. Otherwise, it could hurt your credit score.

Watch out for a foreign transaction fee

If you love to shop online and—most importantly—internationally, steer away from the Shop Your Way Mastercard. The 3% foreign transaction fee adds up quickly.

The temptation to overspend

With all those rewards and special offers, you might spend more than you should, so keep tabs on that shopping spree.

Rewards redemption restrictions

There could be some hoops to jump through, like expiry dates or specific items, when cashing in on those rewards.

Less impressive rewards rates compared to some cards

You’ll get rewards, but there might be cards out there with even better rewards rates for certain types of spending. (We’ll show you some alternatives below.)

Fewer perks compared to premium cards

Unlike premium credit cards, this one might not give you extra treats like travel insurance or concierge service.

Cardholders Q&A—Customer Reviews

Online reviewers will be honest with you—

“The system is a little confusing... like from the regular shopyourway site it doesn’t seem that I can log into the credit card account, so I had to search for a separate site.”

“Just beware of the deferred interest and sky-high interest rate if you’re thinking about carrying a balance on it.”

“Personally speaking, it’s a vaporware product, and since the promos are targeted, it’s even lesser likely to be worth an HP and new account on your CR. That being said, this card certainly has been an interesting case study for the past few years”.

And, last but not least, about the rewards program—

“They run many concurrent promotions, spit out coupons in the store, they randomly give out points to get you to shop more. Sometimes it’s $10 on $40 or $25 on $25 or $250 on $250 spread out over a certain period of time.”

Actionable Advice for Effectively Using Shop Your Way Mastercard

Does it seem like the card is worth it?

If it does, look at some ways you can make it work for you—

Pay your balance in full and on time each month

Always pay your Shop Your Way Mastercard balance in full and on time each month. This way, you won’t have to deal with annoying late fees or extra interest charges.

And it keeps your credit score looking good.

Maximize rewards by shopping strategically

Make sure to shop smart when using the card.

Look for special offers, promotions, and events, as they can help you save money and earn more rewards. It’s like getting the best bang for your buck every time you shop.

If you’re up for the challenge, write the promotions down into your calendar and plan your shopping trips and meal plans accordingly.

Remember that you have to constantly be on the lookout for promotions, as they disappear quickly.

Is Shop Your Way Mastercard Credit Card Good for Me?

Chances are it’s not.

We believe there are better alternatives (you can find them in our list of the best rewards credit cards).

One of them is the Chase Freedom Flex: This card offers a similar rewards setup, with 5% cash back on rotating categories, 3% on dining and drugstore purchases, and 1% on all other spending.

Unlike with the Citi Shop Your Way card, with Chase Freedom Flex, you can redeem points as cash back, a statement credit, gift cards, or for travel. (And they don’t expire.)

Plus, to earn a $200 sign-up bonus, you only need to spend $500 in three months (instead of $1,500).

What if I’m a huge Sears and Kmart fan, you may ask?

Then just get the Sears card. That way, you’ll reap the rewards and won’t be on the hook for paying interest rates.

Or, become a Shop Your Way member and link your existing credit card. Not only is it possible, but even recommended.
