Definition

Curriculum vitae, or CV, are similar in concept to a resume, but it is constructed in a much more formal manner. Curriculum vitae tend to be used by professionals in the fields of academia, research and development, clinical research, and similar scientific positions.

Explanation

In the United States, curriculum vitae typically includes a listing of such things as professional activities and associations, presentations given, publications, and academic or industry honors. By design, it will contain a great deal more information than a resume. For example, in addition to a list of past work experience, a CV would also include a detailed listing of publications and academic achievements.

In Europe, the CV is more common than a resume; again providing a more elaborate array of information. The Europass attempts to standardize the CV format in Europe. The Europass format includes:

  • Personal Information (name, address, date of birth)

  • Desired Employment / Occupational Field

  • Work Experience

  • Education and Training

  • Personal Skills and Competencies
