Calculator Definitions

The variables used in our online calculator are defined in detail below, including how to interpret the results.

Present Value of the Investment ($)

This is the present value of the investment. For example, let's say you have $100,000 today that is growing at a rate of 7% each year for the next ten years. In this example, the present value of the investment would be $100,000.

Number of Time Periods

This is the number of payment periods for the investment. For example, let's say you have $100,000 today that is growing at a rate of 7% each year for the next ten years. In this example, the Number of Time Periods would be 10. Note that the time period used in this section of the calculator must be the same time period used for the Interest Rate.

Interest Rate (% / Time Period)

This is the rate of interest at which the investment will grow over time. For example, let's say you have $100,000 today that is growing at a rate of 7% each year for the next ten years. In this example, the Interest Rate would be 7%. Note that the time value used for the Interest Rate (10% per year) must be consistent with the Number of Time Periods (years).

Future Value of Investment ($)

This is the future value of the investment. This calculator grows the Present Value of the Investment by the Interest Rate specified. For example, $100,000 today that is growing at a rate of 7% each year for the next ten years, would have a future value of $196,715.14.

This time value of money, or TVM, calculator allows the user to enter an initial investment, cash flows, and opportunity cost to calculate the net present value of the money. This allows the investor or analyst to see the affect that time has on the actual value of the money returned.
